D-28 Authentic 1937 VTS AGED Guitar

To achieve this, Martin carefully picks their finest timber and applies their Vintage Tone System (VTS) to the top and bracings. Martin VTS is a highly sophisticated artificial aging process, based on torrefaction but taken several steps further by the Martin R&D-team. Using this unique process allows Martin’s craftsmen to target the age of the guitar to a year, both visually and sonically.
Furthermore Martin’s craftsmen have revived a process of final dressing the finish by hand from the 1900s to achieve a unique, warm glow.

The D-28 is arguably the mother ship of all Martins. Not the oldest, but the most famous and most copied steel string acoustic guitar in history. And 1937 was one of those „holy grail“ years. But we all know, chances are microscopic that we will ever get our hands on one of these mythical creations. Luckily, the brilliant people at Martin are not only willing but also very capable to help!
A team of the most experienced builders has put their heads together and examined and analyzed a genuine D-28 from 1937 to its smallest and seemingly insignificant details, in order to painstakingly re-create every aspect of the guitar's construction.
The top is Adirondack spruce, the neck is made of genuine mahogany. The team did face a major challenge in the choice of wood for the back and sides: As you may know, the wood used back in the thirties was the now fabled Brazilian rosewood, which became increasingly rare, due to excessive use and then, after its official ban in 1992 slowly started disappearing from the market and now is gone alltogether, except for very few remaining bits of old stock which, whenever they turn up, are dealt at exorbitant prices.
In their search for a species of rosewood that is similar to Brazilian rosewood in both, appearance and tone, and available in sufficient quantities, Martin have chosen the spectacular Guatemalan rosewood. Apart from this concession, these guitars are identical to the old originals, the same hide glue is used, as well as the same finishing process as back in the day.
Of course part of the beauty of a vintage instrument comes from its actual age. Wood changes with age, especially a guitar top when the instrument is being played. Martin's unique Vintage Tone System (VTS) is capable to age a guitar top to a specific year, giving the players the tone, attack and sustain of a well played instrument, straight out of the workshop.
